Report Summary: Demonstrating social value, the positive impact that real estate investment and development can have on our communities beyond financial returns, is increasingly becoming a priority for city leadership, real estate owners, investors and developers. However, a lack of common definitions, standards and tools to strategize, manage and measure social value is holding back further investment. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this social value topic even more timely and relevant. COVID-19 is a game changer for the real estate industry and while it has brought major risks to the industry, it has also opened up opportunities to think in new and different ways about how to repurpose and link real estate to local place-based demands, and the role of the real estate industry in helping tackle social and spatial inequalities. Now is the time to put people and places at the heart of real estate.
Zooming in on ESG: A Roadmap for Social Value in Real Estate aims to develop a shared and better understanding of how to define, create, measure and optimize social value across the real estate industry. Not only it gives an overview of the role of real estate in creating social value, but it also explores current industry perceptions and emerging practices related to social value creation and measurement. The report also maps existing frameworks and tools used to measure, manage and report on social value and guidance towards a roadmap on how to incorporate social value creation in real estate.
